Steno Typist trained in shorthand methods that enable them to create verbatim written transcriptions using a steno Type machine. The work of a steno typist is vital during pretrial depositions, hearings and court trials. Stenographers, also called steno typists, are responsible for producing an accurate and complete written record of legal proceedings for lawyers and judges to reference when reviewing the facts of a case.Some steno typists specialize in live captioning for conferences, business meetings, television programs or special events. Speed and accuracy are essential skills in this field. Other important qualities include an ability to focus, listen and attend to details.
Job Description
Steno Typist spend full days typing on a shorthand machine called a steno Type. They type in syllables on the steno Type, which is a much faster method than manual shorthand or typing letters on a computer keyboard. According to proficient steno Typist can type faster than 300 words per minute, which is twice the average rate of speech.
Typing speed is essential in capturing dialogue when multiple people are speaking.Steno Typist are usually employed as court reporters by local and state governments. They typically work for the courts or legislatures to transcribe legal proceedings. Similar positions are available in law firms, businesses and medical facilities that prefer a written record of conversations and meetings. Some steno typists are self-employed freelancers and provide transcription services, as needed.
Depending on their job description, the work of a steno Typist may entail providing live or post-production closed captions for the benefit of television viewers or audience members with hearing impairments. Communication access real-time translation (CART) providers create real-time transcriptions for clients with hearing disabilities in settings such as conferences, college classes and doctor visits.
Steno Typist Education Requirements
Many two-year schools offer certificates and associate degrees in steno Typist that train students in legal terminology and use of steno Typist equipment. Some steno typists learn their skills through on-the-job training provided by their employer. Most states and employers also require passing scores on licensing exams and typing-speed tests, according to the
